B R O W N E Y E S !IF EVERYTHING WAS Jamie's head rested on the hospital bed, her head in her hands, and her hand gripping tightly to Jacob's. As worried as Jamie was, she couldn't help but want to stand up and jump up and down while shouting I told you so! But she didn't. She hid her tear stained face from pedestrians passing by and looking in through the glass windows at Jamie and Jacob. Jacob hadn't woken up since the day he passed out on the beach. Jamie had told him that she didn't feel sorry for him, and she didn't feel bad. But the truth was, she did. She did feel sorry for him, and she did feel bad. She felt sorry for him because he had no family, no one, she wasn't even sure if he had her. And she felt horrible because she wasn't supporting him, and she wasn't trying to get him to stop drinking. Well, she was, but not hard enough, she needed to try harder.
Jamie's attire wasn't exactly hospital appropriate, she sported a cropped top, her whole stomach being revealed along with a bikini beneath her mini shorts and bright blue sandals. Beside her feet, on the ground was her beach bag. Typically, she was dressed for the beach. But what was she supposed to do? Run back to her house, change, then call the hospital to pick up Jacob? She didn't think so, and the doctors said it was a close call as is. Jamie had been sitting at Jacob's bed for hours, one hand gripping his hand, and her other trying to cover up her stomach.
A little while ago, the nurse had noticed her insecurity and offered her a pair of hospital scrubs, Jamie looked over at the on the side table beside the hospital bed and shivered. They were the most hideous things she had ever seen, and when she tried them on, she realized the looks weren't the only thing she had to worry about, but how comfortable it was. It had scratched her everywhere, and she still felt a sudden itch somewhere on her body like she was still wearing it. Even the little slip on shoes the nurse had given her were itchy and itched her open shoe sandal.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••Jacob groaned loudly as he regained consciousness. The first thing that hit him was the pain coming from his head. He had had bad hangovers in the past put this was probably the worst head ache he had ever experienced in his life. It felt like there were hundreds of people in his head shouted and hitting the side of his brain. He couldn’t even think straight. He struggled to think of the last thing he could remember. Was he on the beach? With Jamie? He had faint, very blurry images of Jamie getting cross with him. It was probably about him drinking. He had had people before try and persuade him to give up alcohol but they nearly always gave up very quickly. He just couldn’t help but drink. It relaxed him, made him happy, made him forget all of his troubles. He felt like he couldn’t live without it. However right now he actually felt like giving it up. He had never felt this rough. Not only was his head banging but his stomach was aching and strangely the back of his hand felt sore. Why the hell was the back of his hand sore?
As he shifted round slightly his bed covers felt tight, like he had been tucked in. Had Jamie done that? He felt constricted, like he couldn’t move very well. He also noticed strange sounds. Beeping. He couldn’t be in his bedroom. It didn’t feel like it. As he slowly opened his eyes the whole room seemed blurry and his hung over mind struggled to work out where he was. Everywhere was white and the whole room smelt clean. As he looked round he noticed Jamie was there. She looked beautiful in her beachwear. Although her being there confused him further. He picked up the hand that wasn’t sore and placed it on his other hand, wincing in pain slightly. He looked down, there was something inserted in there. A drip? Was he in hospital? Very slowly he was started to realise that Jamie must have brought him into hospital after he got drunk. He sighed, looking back towards her. “What happened?” His voice was terribly croaky and it hurt to talk. He had never been in such a mess after drinking. Maybe he was going to have to sort his life out.

B R O W N E Y E S !IF EVERYTHING WAS Jamie's head swung up as she heard Jacob groaning and shifting in his bed. He had yet to open his eyes, but she knew he was conscious. She smiled at him, and waited for him to realize where he was and why. He suddenly looked at her and asked her the question she was dreading. She looked around. She tried to stall the answer, the one she had been dreading. " It's a beautiful day out... " She looked out the small window placed closer to the ceiling than it was to the ground. She squinted at the sunlight shining in on her face. She knew her attempt to avoid the question was feeble, but her answer to thatr question she knew would be harsh. It would go something like this: We went to the beach together, you said you were thirsty, so you brought some stupid alcohol, then you drank yourself so far you passed out, now you're here. Jamie also knew by the end of that explanation she would be tearing, and Jacob hated when she cried, though it seemed since she had met him, she had cried so much, maybe that meant something? She shoved the thought to the back of her mind, but no matter how much she tried not to hear it, it seemed to keep rolling back into her concious, bothering her. She shifted uncomfortably, wanting the thought to leave her be and just tell her things would be alright.
After a few minutes of avoiding the question she decided it was time to tell him what happened. " You... We went to the beach, and you drank yourself 'til you passed out. " She decided to leave out the other parts, but still, she began tearing, she tried to wipe the tears that fell down her cheeks but they were falling down too quickly. And after a few moments of trying to catch the tears, she left them so they could rid of themselves. She looked away before looking back at Jacob, she didn't know exactly why she was crying, maybe it was because Jacob had been so close to death? Maybe it was because it seemed Jamie cared more for him than she would've wanted to. She passed her hand over her face and sighed. She touched his face but pulled back quickly, he was burning. She hit the "Call Nurse" before commenting on his outrageous fever. " God, you're burning. Are you okay? " She realized afterwards that that was a stupid question, but didn't bother fixing it. Jamie wiped her forehead nervously as the nurse entered the room. " What's the problem? " Jamie looked at him, as if he had the answer, " He's burning up like an oven. "

•••••••••••••••••••••••••Jamie’s answer confused Jacob even further. Why had she avoided the question? He frowned, desperately trying to remember what had happened on the beach. Had he done something seriously bad to upset her? Like more then drinking to the point he passed out. Jacob wasn’t normally violent when he was drunk but could he have been this time. No there was no way he would have hurt Jamie. Then why was she blatantly avoided his question. He groaned again. Having to think about things was making his feel worse. In fact he was feeling worse and worse by the second. He thought you were supposed to get better when you were in hospital. The pain in his head was getting unbearable and he felt like his whole body was on fire. Why was he so hot? He watched Jamie carefully as she stared out the window. She looked upset. Seriously upset. Did she really care about him that much? He panicked slightly. Had he let someone get too close to him. He promised himself he wouldn’t let that happen. Although he slept around he wasn’t actually a harsh person, he definitely didn’t want anyone’s heart to get broken because he himself knew what that feels like. However, he also knew that he would never ever commit. He wasn’t going to be like his Dad and have to suffer losing someone that he really cared about. He thought he had made this point clear to Jamie but yet here she was, by his hospital bed, looking like he had died or something.
Finally she answered the question. He frowned, his mind becoming slightly clearer. He remembered the beach incident now and he remembered why he had done it. It was the same every year though he had to admit he had never gone to the point of passing out. The anniversary of his Mum and brother’s death made him depressed. So he drank to try and just forget it all. He just couldn’t bear sitting down and thinking about it all day because it actually made him want to cry and Jacob was a hard nut to crack. As tears ran down Jamie’s face Jacob frowned, partly because he wondered if she did truly like him or even love him and partly because he was feeling worse. He felt Jamie’s hand on his head and it felt like she was a block of ice against his forehead. He saw her press the call nurse button and went to kick up a fuss but suddenly didn’t have the energy. His vision went blurry as he heard the nurse arrive. Suddenly he felt sick and he grabbed the edge of the bed, pulling himself up to be sick on the floor opposite where Jamie was sitting. He groaned, leaning his burning hot head against the coolness of the metal railings on his bed. He had never felt so bad.

B R O W N E Y E S !IF EVERYTHING WAS It took Jamie a moment to realize what Jacob was doing, but she really knew when the smell hit her, she almost threw up herself. Even the nurse cringed. Jamie hated puke, but she stayed put as the nurse cleaned up Jacob's mess. Jamie stroked Jacob's cheek as his head was facing the other way, resting on the railing. Jamie waited for his head to turn back towards her, but it hadn't, and she was longing to see his face. It was weird, she was just looking at him a couple seconds ago, it's not like she hadn't seen his face in ages. She frowned at herself. Why did she like him so much? He made her feel like crap, she realized. But. Somewhere, deep down, which sounds like a big load of crap but, she felt like she loved him. It made her even more uncomfortable than she already was. It was strange, because she had just recently met him, but at the same time, it made sense. He was the first person she slept with, maybe that had something to do with it. She didn't know, but she cared about him none the less.
When the nurse had finished cleaning up Jacob's mess she took a needle and added it to Jacob's IV, probably to help his fever. A different nurse entered the room soon after the other nurse left and handed Jamie and Jacob each a tray of food, Jamie guessed he would eat, but maybe he would? Jamie grabbed her spoon and slowly took a bite of the red Jello resting in a bowl on her tray, she loved Jello, but somehow at the moment, it wasn't very appealing to her. Jamie looked at the rest of the food sitting on her tray, none of it looked exactly appealing to her. There was a hot grilled cheese sandwich waiting for her along with what looked like tomato soup, but with hospitals, you could never be sure what exactly they were serving you. Jamie picked apart the grilled cheese and ate the bread, slowly, glancing at Jacob every couple of bites. She took a sip of what looked like apple juice but tasted more like very lightly flavored water. She set down and cringed.
Jamie hadn't realized it, but she had finished everything on her plate but her Jello, she she picked up her spoon again and began poking it and watchig it shake. She popped a small bite into her mouth and smooshed it under her tongue, against the roof of her mouth. She swallowed it, knowing she should finish her meal, but not wanting to. She looked over and noticed Jacob was on a much simpler diet, it was probably safe. The nurse had served him butter toast with some iced water, grapes and chicken noodle soup. Jamie sighed and touched Jacob's forehead again, noticing it had cooled of considerably. The meds the nurse had pumped into his IV must've been working. Jamie sighed with releif.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••Jacob frowned, keeping his face on the cold metal. He couldn’t face looking back at Jamie after what had just happened. He actually felt ashamed. Being sick in front of her was just gross. He was sure he had probably been sick many times when he was drunk but of course he hadn’t felt the embarrassment. Now he was sober he felt awful for just being sick. He wanted to stay against the cold metal, partly so he didn’t have to see Jamie’s face and also because he was just so god damn hot. He felt the nurse injecting something more into him. He really really hoped that was going to make him feel a lot better. He never actually realised how much he hated hospitals. Hospitals he felt only ever meant bad news. He remembered when he was twelve sitting in a waiting room for thirteen hours, hoping, praying that his Mum was going to pull through. His Dad had been by her bedside so he was all on his own. It had been about midnight when a Doctor walked in, a frown on his face. His Mum hadn’t made it. Jacob at first couldn’t believe it. He thought he must be having a bad dream. To lose your younger brother and Mum in one day was just awful and that couldn’t happen to a person but it did. It happened to Jacob. Then, just weeks later he had to make his next trip to hospital. This was probably worse then the one before. His Dad had gone missing and Jacob had to go into the hospital to identify a body they had found at the bottom of a river. He’ll never forget walking into the room and seeing his Dad lying down on the table, his eyes shut, pale as anything. That’s when Jacob had started drinking. He tried to forget everything that had happened that year but he couldn’t.
He could feel tears welling up in his eyes which he wiped away quickly. He hated how much this hospital was reminding him of all the bad things and he just wanted to get out. As he turned back onto his back he saw that a tray of food had been left for him. He seriously didn’t feel like it and even if he did the last food that he would want would be the rubbish that they were serving him. He just sighed, shutting his eyes, trying to cut out everything. He couldn’t even think about Jamie at the moment. He was worried that she had true feelings for him because he wouldn’t know how to deal with it. When he opened his eyes again he saw that Jamie had eaten all of the meal she had been given. “Were you hungry?” He said, trying to be light hearted but his voice still sounded all croaky. The quicker he presented signs of improvement though the quicker he could get out of this hospital. The quicker he could forget the memories again.

B R O W N E Y E S !IF EVERYTHING WAS Jacob's question startled Jamie, she jumped slightly and looked over at him. She shrugged, " Not really, but you've been in here for a few days and I haven't eaten since... So, I know I needed to get some food in me. " She paused for a moment and thought about what she was going to say next she chose her words carefully, she wasn't about to say anything that would upset him, but the nurse said he was unstable and that she should be careful around him. The nurse had asked her a bunch of questions that she didn't know the answer to, but the one that bothered her was: Is he a violent drunk? Jamie had replied with a touch of hurt, Of course he's not a violent drunk! She remembered exactly how the conversation went, all the questions the nurse asked her, even though she was out of it. Jamie sighed and rubbed her eyes, she hadn't really slept in days, she was tired but she refused to sleep. The nurse said that he would probably be released today, if not tomorrow.
" You should eat. " Jamie glanced at his food on the tray which was placed on one of the side tables that were placed on either side of his hospital bed and shifted uncomfortably in her chair. " How're you feeling? The nurse came in and dosed you up, but if you need more meds or something to make you feel better, I can call her back in and see if she can do something, because feeling bad is never good, I know how you feel, sometimes it just sucks being sick and in hospitals... " After a couple minutes of talking straight through she took a breath and calmed herself down, her babble fest was finished and now the worrying feeling came back and flooded her thoughts, she wished she hadn't of eaten because now she felt like she was going to throw up. She swallowed down the feeling along with the thought that she loved Jacob.
But the thoughts that Jamie didn't want kept coming and flooding the pleasant thoughts. It was frustrating, almost as if she couldn't control her own thoughts. She had tried focusing on just one thing, but of course the thoughts came crashing down on the pleasant thoughts. Was he mind incapable of focusing on certain thoughts? Or was it just because it wanted her to sort through all the bad thoughts, before moving on to the pleasant ones? That must've been it because her mind started working a thousand miles an hour. Sorting through the passed couple days she had spent with Jacob, she had never believed in love at first sight, so how was this even possible? Just because you don't believe in something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. A little voice whispered in her ear, she looked around, it wasn't her own thoughts, was she going crazy? Jamie casually and descretely leaned over and plugged her ears, it did know good. It's coming from inside my head. Jamie concluded with a worrying feeling.
Jamie shifted uncomfortably in her seat, once more. She was more worried that the voice was correct, than where it was coming from and why. It was true, just because you don't believe in something doesn't mean it doesn't exist, it can still happen. The same words kept whirling around her mind in a continuous circle that made her dizzy and was to be sick even more than she did before. Jamie glanced at Jacob quickly just to see his face before going back to staring wherever she was staring before, because it's exact location was unknown to her. All she knew was she was staring somewhere, she was too deep in thought it care. Jacob must be thinking I'm crazy. Jamie realized and blinked, snapping herself out of her thoughts and back into reality, though it seemed that she was still focusing on the thoughts that didn't want to move out of her brain and find a new place to live.
Jamie's eyes darted around the room, it seemed these last couple of minutes, but what seemed like hours, were spent focusing on her thoughts and not the world moving so quickly around her. A nurse entered the room again, noticing Jamie's empty tray she walked towards Jamie. " Are you done with this, sweetheart? " That did the trick, Jamie blinked and somehow she was sitting back in the hospital chair and her thoughts had disappeared into thin air, the only thoughts that remained were the ones telling her what to say and do next. She smiled at the nurse and nodded, " Yeah, uh, thanks. " Even though her thoughts were now just basic, telling her what to say and do, they still weren't on full speed and it took a moment to respond and collect herself. The nurse took it off her lap, which Jamie forgot was there, the tray, not her lap, and walked off through the doors and towards what Jamie would guess was the kitchen, or cafeteria which would contain the kitchen.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••Jacob frowned slightly in annoyance and sadness as Jamie answered his question. He had only asked her a simple question but she had seemed outraged. To be honest Jacob just hated silence. Even though his mind was all fuzzy and he couldn’t think straight all he wanted to do was talk to Jamie. Keep the conversation going so that there was no silence. He was quite hurt by her answer. Of course he understood that Jamie might be angry about what he did, anyone would but he wished that she would just talk about it, not just snap at him. Then again he didn’t know if he was just being stupid. Hearing things in the wrong way or misinterpreting it. so there was no way he was going to say anything. He didn’t want to upset Jamie. He knew that one day soon she was probably going to get her heart broken so he needed to be as nice as possible to her so he could use the line Can we be friends? He sighed to himself. He did really really really like Jamie but that was the problem. He couldn’t like her. He promised himself he wasn’t going to do that. He never ever had a girlfriend and he couldn’t start now. Many of his friends thought that he was weird for not wanting the whole experience of having a girlfriend but because of what happened with his parents he just couldn’t. If his Dad hadn’t been so in love with his mother then he wouldn’t have killed himself after she died. He knew that one day he would probably have a family but he doubted that he would ever get married and stay with the mother of his children. He really wouldn’t be desperately disappointed if he didn’t have kids though but sometimes these things happen.
He frowned slightly. He had been passed out for a few days. That was seriously bad. He wondered what he had missed and had Jamie been there the whole time? God. It was going to be harder then he thought to explain that he really didn’t want to go out with her because he didn’t commit. Maybe he should just give her the cold shoulder, make her not like him and then when she had moved on he would try and be friends with her because he really really didn’t want them to be enemies because he did think that she was a really sweet girl. Could he be that harsh though to just ignore her? Maybe he should just be off with her, not exactly ignore her because believe it or not but Jacob knew how to treat a girl well. As he shook his head he looked up at Jamie slightly. “Hospital food will just make me feel even more sick.” He said bluntly. It was true. He didn’t even have normal food the day after heavy drinking and the disgusting tasteless food that was made at hospitals would just make him want to be sick again. His stomach felt strangely empty though and his throat hurt. Had his stomach been pumped? It made him wince just at the thought of it. The idea of a tube going down your throat and sucking the contents of your stomach out was just so weird. He so hoped that hadn’t happened to him.
How are you feeling? He didn’t know how to answer that question. To be honest he was feeling pretty bad. Headache, sick and his whole body aching but he didn’t want anymore drugs pumped into him. So he lied. “Yeah I’m good.” He said, nodding as he shut his eyes He sighed, wanting to take the drip out his hand. He didn’t want any more medicine so why would he need it? He gently opened his eyes, looking down at his hand and gently picked the stickers off his hand and pulling out the drip, wincing in pain slightly. He knew it was a stupid idea the second after it was out. They were a bitch to get back in and hurt quite a lot and there was no doubt that the nurse would want to put the drip back in. He sighed. He just wanted to get out of the hospital as quickly as possible and the drip made him feel pathetic. As the nurse came in to take Jamie’s tray away he hid his hand under the covers, to hide the fact his drip was out and smiled at her. If he looked like he was getting back to normal then maybe they would let him out even sooner. Although he knew that the nurse wasn’t stupid and would probably see through him it was worth a try. He pulled himself up slightly, frowning at his lack of strength. “Nurse. Is there any way I could get a coffee please?” He asked politely, smiling at her again. He wanted to feel more awake and coffee always did the trick. It made him want to get up and do things and what was definitely what he needed right now. Not lots more drugs pumped into him.
